Slots Glossary

Action - this refers to the total amount of money bet in a specific period of time.

Carousel - this is a group of slot machines.

Coin size - this is the value of the coin that you are betting. For Example a 50 cent machine would be a 50 cent piece.

Hit - this is the slang term for a win on an slot machine.

Hopper - this is where the money is stored inside the machine.

Max Bet - this is the largest amount of coins you are allowed to play on one spin.

Onesies - this is the slang term for a player who will only play single coin at a time.

Payline - this is the winning line or lines on a Slot machine, as indicated by the pay table.

Payout - this is the amount a machine awards a customer for a particular win.

Reels - this is the wheels inside of the Slot machine that spin around when in play. Where these reels lands determines if a play is a win or not.

Symbols - these are the pictures on the reels used to determine wins. Traditionally these included stars, fruit and numbers, but now can include just about anything that is in keeping with the theme of the machine.

Tilt - this is common name for a Slot machine malfunction. Usually a malfunction voids all plays and you must wait till it is fixed to play again.

Winning Combination - this is when the different combinations of symbols on the reels which must be hit in order for a machine payout to occur.

Wild - this is usually a symbol on a machine that can be substituted for any other symbol in order for a payout to occur.

Zombie - this is the slang term for a player who sits at the same machine and plays it over and over mindlessly, without switching machines.
