Roulette Glossary

Action - this is the amount of money wagered over a period of time. This is used to judge comps.

American Wheel - this is the wheel that has 38 numbers and in America has 00.

Backtrack - this is the outer stationery part of the wheel in which the ball is spun. It is also referred to as the Ball-Track.

Ball - this is the small plastic ball which is spun in the opposite direction of the wheel's spin. The roulette ball determines the winnings for each spin each time it lands in one of the numbers on the wheel.

Bankroll - this is the amount of money that a player sets aside to gamble with.

Blacks - this is the chip which is valued at $100.

Bottom Track - this is the slanting inner stationery area of the wheel which the ball then rolls down to before bouncing into the wheel head then into a number.

Cage - this is the booth or room in which the casino cashier resides.

Carré - this is the French term for the Corner Bet.

Check Rack- this is the tray that hold the chips or checks for a game. This is also referred to as a Chip Tray or Chip Rack.

Checks - this is another name for the chips.

A Cheval - this is the French term for the Split Bet.

Colonne - this is the French term for Column Bet.

Color Up - this is where a player exchanges smaller amount chips for larger value chips.

Column Bet - this is a bet made on one of the three columns of 12 numbers on the layout. When placing your chips on one of three blank spaces at the bottom of the green you collect if any of those twelve vertical numbers win.

Corner Bet - this is where one wager bets four numbers at the same time. This may also be referred to as a Square Bet or a Quarter Bet.

Crew - this is the people who man the game.

Crossroader - this is a name for a casino cheat.

Croupier - this is the French term for the operator of the wheel.

Dealer - this is the employee who is manning the game at the casino.

Derrière - this is the French term for last and refers to the last group of 12 numbers in the Dozen Bet.

Douzaine - this is the French term for the Dozen Bet.

Dozen Bet - this is the wager on 12 numbers on the layout at the same time.

Drop - this is the term for the total amount of money and markers wagered at the tables.

Drop Box - this is a box where money is dropped in when a player wishes to cash into a game and receive his chips. The Box is usually under the table.

En Plein - this is the French term for the Straight-up Bet.

European Wheel - this is the wheel in which a single zero appears.

Even Money - this is when a pay off occurs at one to one this occurs on the red, black, odd, even, low, and high bets.

Eye in the Sky - this is where the cameras are hidden in little bubbles on the ceiling of the casino so as to be able to catch casino cheats and check the action in the casino.

Floorman - this is the person in charge of supervising tables in the pit.

French Wheel - this is the wheel containing zero and is the same as the European Wheel.

Gambling Stake - this is the amount of money that a player has reserved for betting this is also known as Bankroll.

George - this is what is a good tipper is referred to.

Greens - this is the chip that is valued at $25.

Grifter - this is the term for a scam artist.

Grind - this is what a small time player is referred to.

Heat – this is what a casino does to someone who is either cheating or has a gift so as to see if it just luck or true expertise or just plan cheating.

High Roller - this is what a person is called who plays for big money.

Hoca - this is an early version of roulette.

Hustler - this is term used for a cheat.

Impair - this is the French term used for the Odd Bet.

Inside Bet - this is the term used for a bet placed on any individual number including zero and double zero.

Layout - this is the design of the felt table on which the various bets can be made.

Line Bet - this is where a bet is made that one of six numbers will win.

Low Bet - this is where a wager is placed on one of the low number will win the next spin.

Low Roller - this is what is referred to as a player who bets small stakes as opposed to high stakes.

Manqué - this is the French term for Low Bet.

Mark – this is the person who is being suckered or going to be cheated.

Marker - this is a note a player writes out to gain credit at the Casino.

Nickel - this is the chip of red color that denotes $5.

Noir - this is the French term for Black Bet.

Outside Bet - this is the bet made outside of the roulette layout such as red, black, odd, even, high or low.

Paddle - this is the object used to push the money into the drop box.

Pair – this is the French term used for Even Bet.

Parley - this is to double the bet after the win.

Passé - this is the French term used for High Bet.

Penny Ante - this is the game is played for small stakes.

Pit - this is the area in which the gaming tables are set up.

Premiere - this is the French term for first and refers to the group of 12 numbers in the Dozen Bet.

Press - this is the term used for increasing the amount one wages by doubling it up after a win.

Push - this is a tie.

Quarter Bet - this is the term used for a wager that bets 4 numbers at the same time. This is also referred to as Corner Bet or Square Bet.

Reds this is the chip which is worth $5.

Rien Ne Vas Plus - this is the French term used for No More Bets.

Rouge - this is the French term for red.

Shift Boss - this is the term used for a worker who is in charge during a certain work shift.

Shill - this is person that works for the casino who sits in on games that are being underplayed.

Six Number Bet - this is the combination bet as six numbers at the same time. This is also referred to as Line Bet.

Sixain {E} - this is the French term used for a Six Number Bet or Line Bet.

Split Bet - this is a combination bet of two numbers at the same time.

Spread - this is the difference between the minimum and maximum bets a player makes.

Square Bets - this is the wager that bets four numbers at the same time. This is also known as the Corner Bet or Quarter Bet.

Stack - this is a group of 20 chips.

Tiers Du Cylindre - this is a French term used for a bet on a specific group of numbers on a section of the wheel that are paired up on the layout.

Toke - this is the term used for a tip.

Tom - this is what is commonly referred to as a person who does not tip well.

Trio Bet - this is the bet made on a combination of three numbers at the same time. This is also referred to as a Street Bet.

Triple - this is the French term used for Three Number Bet or Street Bet. This is also referred to as a Trio Bet or Transversale.

Twelve Number Bet - this is the bet on one of the three columns of 12 numbers on the layout. When placing your chips on one of three blank spaces at the bottom of the green you collect if any of those twelve vertical numbers win.

Two bet Number - this is the inside combination bet of two numbers at the same time.

Vig or Vigorish - this is the casino tax that is placed on a bet. This is also called Juice.

Voisins Du Zero - this is a French term for a bet placed on a specific group of numbers on a section of the wheel neighbor to the zero.

Wager - this is another term for a bet.

Zero - this is the number in green on the wheel.
