Baccarat Glossary
Bank - is the hand that is dealt to last which acts last.
Burn - this means to discard cards at the beginning of the shoe.
Callman - this is the dealer who runs or calls the game.
Croupier - this is the term used in France for the dealer.
Dealer - this is a person who works for the casino at the game.
Down Card - this is a face down card.
Fade - this means to cover all or part of the bank bet, also called cover or cover the bank.
High Roller - this is a player who wages big bets.
La Grande - this is the French term for the nine dealt in a natural.
La Petite - this is the French term for the eight dealt in a natural.
Lace - this is where cards a re placed at random into a stack of cards one at a time.
Natural - this is the original hand consisting of the first two cards which total 8 or 9.
Player Hand - this is the hand that opposes the bank hand, which receives cards and acts by itself.
Punto - this is the player.
Rule Card - this is the card that shows the rules for play in Baccarat and Chemin de Fer.
Sabot - this is the French term for the shoe.
Shills - this is the employee of the casino who is suppose to sit at an empty table to attract players to the game.
Shoe - this is the wooden box that is used for holding and dispensing playing cards to be dealt.
Standoff – this is what is referred to as a tie.
Starter - this is the employee of the casino who is suppose to sit at an empty table to attract players to the game.
Tie - this is where neither the house nor the player wins.
Up card - this is the face up card.
Vigorish - this is the 5% commission charged on the winning banker hands.
VIP - this is another name for a high roller and stands for a Very Important Person.
Face Cards - this is the cards that are commonly referred to as the Jack, Queen and King which together with the 10 have a zero valuation.
